NEW ZEALAND AIRMAN KILLED
FORMER TIMARU RESIDENT Information that their son, acting Flight Lieutenant Eugene John Hetherington, was killed in air operations on December 14 has been received by Mr and Mrs J. M. Hetherington, James street, Timaru. The message was received on Saturday morning and contained an expression of profound sympathy from the Air Council. Flight Lieutenant Hetherington was 25 years of age and was well known as an amateur boxer. He was educated at the Marist Brothers’ School, Timaru, of which he was dux, and later he attended the Timaru Boys’ High School. Subsequently he was employed with the ground staff of the New Zealand Airways at the aerodrome, Saltwater Creek, till September 1934, when he took up a similar position at the Mascot aerodrome, Sydney. Afterwards he joined the staff of Imperial Airways, going to Croydon, where he passed the examinations for entry into "the Royal Air Force. Given a short-service commission in May 1937 he was posted to a unit at Heliopolis, Egypt, and returned to England last year. He was stationed at Newmarket, England, according to the last advice his parents had from him.
