WAIKOUAITI NOW IN TWO
BREAK FORWARD OF BRIDGE SALVAGING OPERATIONS CONTINUE The Waikouaiti has broken in two. The break is forward of the bridge, but the after part has not yet sunk and it is not thought that it will for some time yet. The weather at Bluff has been good and a moderate easterly breeze last night was not expected to have much effect on the vessel. The Waikouaiti is sheltered from easterly weather. Salvage operations are continuing. The Orewa made two trips to the Waikouaiti yesterday and brought back a fair cargo of keyhole ties, rolls of wire netting, coils of wire and sundries. Much of the cargo previously salvaged has been delivered to its destination. Last Monday the Waitaki took some of the cargo to Dunedin and on Saturday the Waimarino took the cargo bound for Wellington. There is still a little left to go to Oamaru. The Orewa used one of the Waikouaiti’s boats to transport some of the cargo.
