CALEDONIAN GAMES
PREPARATIONS NOW UNDER WAY Work has already begun on the preparing of the running and cycling tracks for the Caledonian Games at Invercargill in 1940. The tracks will be surveyed and set before the holiday period, according to the report of the Grounds Committee to last night’s meeting of the Invercargill Caledonian Society. There were present: Mr John MacGregor (president) and Messrs R. D. Donaldson, D. W. Anderson, F. Sutherland, J. Matheson, H. Insall, V. S. Vial, Ellis Sutton, R' G. Diack, A. McDonald, J. M. Mackintosh, W. Young, P. Scott, F. Waldron, A. E. Cocker, H. C. Kelly and the secretary (Mr M. C. Wilson). A feature of the games will be a grand parade of competitors and veterans, and a special sub-committee was appointed to arrange the details. Mr D. M. Scandrett was appointed auditor to fill a vacancy. It was resolved that a full meeting of officials be held in the week of the games so that all would be conversant with their duties. Donations have been given by the following:—Sir Robert Anderson, £3/3/- Centennial Cup, most points in running events (open). Southland Amateur Sports Trust, £3/3/-, Centennial Cup, most points in amateur running and field events. Southland Frozen Meat Co., £3/3/- Centennial Cup, most points in cycling, amateur and cash. Co.-op. Beech Timber Co. of Southland, £3/3/- Centennial Cup, most points in bushcraft events. Mr A. Fraser, Centennial Cup to winner of 14 inch underhand chop. Mr Hugh MacDonald, Centennial Cup, most points in dancing (open class). MiFrank Holloway, Centennial Cup, most points in dancing events (under 14 class), open to dancers 12 to 14 only. Mr R. Harris, Lomeville Junction
Hotel, Centennial Cup, most points in piping events. To commemorate the centennial gathering the society is able, through the generosity and interest of the donors, to present centennial cups to the competitors gaining most points in sectional events on the programme. A donation of £l/1/- from Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., will be awarded as a special trophy to the winner of the women’s 75 yards amateur. As the Southland outdoor shooting championships are to be held in conjunction with the games it was decided to send circular letters to miniature rifle clubs throughout the province. Letter will also be sent to business firms reminding them of the interhouse relays.
