WINTON

CENTENNIAL CUP TO BE AWARDED A two-guinea cup, to be called the Centennial Cup is to be given for the best-kept, section in the town, irrespective of the number of vegetables or flowers growing, by the Winton Borough Council. The judging is to be carried out during the second week in February by the Winton and District Horticultural Society. This was decided at the monthly and final-meet-ing for the year of the Winton Borough Council when a letter was received from the Horticultural Society requesting a donation of a trophy for its show to be held in conjunction with Winton’s centennial celebrations week. There were present at the meeting the Mayor (Mr T. Walker) and Crs N. Metzger, T. N. Eastlake, W. H. J. Shaw and F. Tilley. It was decided that the cup be called the Centennial Cup and that the judging be carried out by the Horticultural Society. It was decided* that entries would not be necessary and those not wishing their sections to compete could in* form the judges when they called during their visit of inspection in the second week of February. A’ letter was received from Mr J. Hargest, M.P., stating that he had made application to the Minister of Housing about the promised five houses for Winton and had asked him if he would push the matter on at the earliest moment Mr Hargest added that he would let the council know if he received anything tangible front the Minister. An application from the secretary of the Holy Trinity Church (Mr J. T; Hobbs) for permission to hold a fair in Anzac Oval on February 1 was granted. The secretary of the Southland Children’s Health Camp Association (Miss G. Basstian) wrote stating that as it was intended to hold the health camp at Omaui as usual this year and as it was found more difficult to fin-, ance the actual maintenance the association would very much appreciate if the council could see its way clear to make a donation towards the running cost of the camp. "The camp begins on December 29 for a period of two months,” continued the letter, “and during that time approximately 120 poor and undernourished children from all parts of Southland will be accommodated.” It was decided to reply that the council was in sympathy with the scheme but was unable to give a donation. The Southland Provincial Centennial Council asked if the council intended to proceed with the project of the recreation grounds and celebrations in commemoration of the centennial. It was reported that an affirmative reply had been forwarded and the celebration dates advised.
