END OF SCHOOL YEAR

CONCERT GIVEN BY BLUFF PUPILS The annual break-up ceremony and concert of the Bluff school was held in the Bluff Town Hall. There was a large attendance of parents, and much talent was shown by the children in the P re “ sentation of their items. The first nail of the programme consisted of items by the children of the lower classes. During the latter part an operetta was presented by the Standard 6 pupils. Entitled "The Sea,” this item was given a great reception by the audience. The success of this was due mainly to the producers—Messrs Beatson and Gardner and to the two leading players, Rata Coote and Leon Riley. During the operetta many old sea shanties were sung. Before the presentation of the merit certificates Mr F. H. Pearce, chairman of the School Committee, addressed the parents expressing the appreciation of the school children and of the committee of the assistance given to them during the past year by the parents and friends. On behalf of the committee he also sincerely thanked Mrs W. B. Dixon for her generosity in giving the dux medal, adding that this was the second occasion on which she had given the medal. ' ■ The speaker pointed out that as in previous years the children would not be given prizes but the money would be set aside for improving the school library. Mr D. Standard I.—Petrine Hansen 1, Marjorie Johnson 2, John Arnott 3. The Mayor (Mr J. Cameron) presented the school leaving certificates and special prizes given by Mrs D. E. S. Mason and Mrs F. A. Pearce. Mrs Mason’s prize for the best project on first aid was won by Neil Tennant. The prize given by Mrs F. A. Pearce was for the runner-up for the dux medal, Margaret Fowler. A special sports champion certificate was presented to Glen Luker. Mr S. Rice, chairman of the Southland Education Board, then presented the dux medal to Allison Williamson. Mr Rice congratulated her on her success and called for three cheers for her from her school mates. ST. JOHN AMBULANCE BRIGADE A public inspection and demonstration was given by the members of the Bluff Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade in the Athenaeum hall on Saturday night. Mr J. Bemrose, district officer for Invercargill, and Mr J. F. Kennedy, district sergeant, carried out the inspection. When delivering their report at the conclusion of the demonstration they stated that the work done during the evening was of a very high standard. The manner in which the men s division carried out its duties was particularly commendable. The evening’s programme included a practical demonstration of the Neil Robertson splint. This apparatus is used to hoist injured or sick men from ships where ordinary stretcher-bearing would mean unnecessary bumping and jolting of the patient. The Women’s Division gave demonstrations of bandaging and home nursing. • Mrs D. E. S. Mason was presented with a vase ’ v the members of the brigade and the association. The Mayor (Mr J. Cameron) presented first aid efficiency certificates to the following: Mrs D. E. S. Mason, Mrs N. Tennant, Mrs C. Beaton, Mrs L. Johnson. First aid and home nursing certificates were presented to Mrs G. Muir, Mrs McKinney. Miss E. Denny, Miss J. Junge and Miss P. Beaton. Mrs H. Norris gained a home nursing certificate ana Mrs J. McKenzie and Mr G. Muir received first aid certificates. The results of a St. John Ambulance Association examination held during the week were announced. The successful candidates were: Mrs A. Silvester, Miss W. Tonkinson, Miss R. Lopdell, Miss M. Roderictue. Miss A. Robertson, Miss O. Malcolm, Miss L. Hunter and Mr T. O’Toole. HOTEL GUESTS Recent guests at the Club Hotel included Messrs H. Large (Napier), L. D. Simington (Wellington), Gates (Queenstown), Mrs J. H. Greig (Ashburton), Mrs Montgomery, Mrs A.
