SPORTS MEETING A SUCCESS

Annual Fixture At Gorge Road KEEN COMPETITION IN ALL SECTIONS In perfect weather and before a large attendance of spectators from the surrounding district and from Invercargill, the Gorge Road Picnic Sports Society held its third annual fixture on the grounds adjoining the school on Saturday afternoon. The meeting was in every way successful, and a bright programme- of events, with a high standard of performance in all sections, ensured good entertainment for the crowd. The gate takings were £27/10/-, compared with £23 last year. A comparatively young organization, the Gorge Road Picnic Sports Society had spared no effort to make the fixature enjoyable for competitor and spectator alike. The programme included amateur running, amateur cycling, bushcraft and dancing events, the dancing being introduced for the first time. Clay-bird shooting was an additional attraction. Trophies were given in all events except the bushcraft section where cash prizes were awarded. , A number of athletes from the Invercargill and St. Paul’s Clubs travelled to the meeting and helped to swell the entries in the running events which were bigger than last year. The honours in the 100 yards and 220 yards events went to the Atley brothers, J. N. Sinclair and C. F. Harvey, G. H. Bilbrough, running in effortless style, won the mile from scratch, beating R. Robertson to the tape by a foot. R. Dixon ran well to finish a close third. Good entries were received in the cycling section'and the three amateur events—the mile, half-mile and mile and a-half—created much interest. J. Webb won the half-mile in an exciting finish'; A. Drury won the mile by half a wheel from K. Jones and H. Jones won the mile and a-half by inches. The three races were keenly contested, the finishes could scarcely have been closer, and the crowd was treated to an exhibition of fast cycling which was not without its, thrills., ■ - . ■ ..
