VICTORY SHOOTING SHIELD
BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL’S SUCCESS
The Victory Shield for the best team of rifle shots in the secondary schools in the Southern Command has been won this year for the first time by the Southland Boys’ High School with the record score of 228 J points. Otago Boys’ High School was second with 219Jpts and Waitaki Boys’ High School was third with 218pts. The winning team is as follows: H. C. Rowley, V. C. Officer, A. R. Stewart, P. J. Ritchie, I. G. Gilbertson, W. G. O’Toole, N. G. Leckie, A. M. Bradfield, S. C. Smart and C. W. Snow. The shield was originally presented by Mr G. G. Stead to the best team of rifle shots in the Canterbury defence cadets. The plaque on the shield is made of copper taken from Nelson’s Victory and presented as a centenary memento on October 21, 1905. In 1921 the shield was reallotted to the best team of r ifle shots (.303 rifles) in the secondary schools in the Southern Command. The winning team was coached by Lieutenant G. Geddes.
