NEW ORPHANAGE IN NORTHLAND
(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, December 15. An orphanage for Protestant children of Northland was officially opened yesterday afternoon, thus marking the culmination of an effort on the part of a man who wishes to remain anonymous. Some years ago he bought 20 acres of land adjacent to Whangarei and then gave £lO,OOO as an endowment for the maintenance of an orphanage, provided the building was erected free of debt.
As the public response was very tardy, he subsidized £1 for £1 public subscriptions up to £6OO. “This was raised mainly through the children’s page of The Northern Advocate, and a women’s committee completed the furnishing. The building is modern in every respect and the site is ideal.”
