MANY FINE WINNERS BRED AT GLENTRUIM STUD

Great Influence On Southland Thoroughbreds

FOR many years the Glentruim Stud at Otautau has been recognized as the leading thoroughbred nursery in Southland and down through the years it has contributed many notable winners to the turf in Southland and further afield. Founded by Mr Alex Chisholm at Otautau about 30 years ago, the stud has been a major contributor to the racing industry in Otago and Southland and at the present time it is rightly held as one of the leading establishments of its kind in the Dominion. As a racing centre Southland owes much of its success to the Glentruim Stud, which has had a remarkable influence in the type of thoroughbred raced and bred from in this province. A stud farm cannot achieve success overnight; selected sires and the consistency with which they produce winners are two major factors which have built up a worth-while name for the Glentruim stud. Mr Chisholm’s establishment comprises about 300 acres of some of the best grass land in the province, and is ideally suited for the purpose for which it is being used.

Among the early sires used at the stud were Rose Noble, Ngatapa, Some Boy 11, Woodend, Balboa, Irish Lancer and Salmagundi and Siegfried which are at present doing service. Some years ago Mr Chisholm imported the mares Glentruin and Sabor and later Celerity II and Spean Bridge, and they, too, have been bred on. Glentruin proved one of the finest mares ever raced in New Zealand and she won stakes of about £lO,OOO. The daughter of Sunflower II was one of the finest types of thoroughbreds ever to appear on a New Zealand racecourse and twice won the Stewards’ Handicap at Riccarton against high-class sprinters. Celerity II won the majority of important handicaps in the south while Spean Bridge and Sabor were also good winners. ■' ■ At the stud Glentruin produced only three foals—Lochlaggen, Glentruin’s Daughter and Ardchoille, all being by Woodend. Lochlaggen showed brilliant sprint form at times while Ardchoille won useful races up to a mile and a-quarter but neither aspired to the same heights as their dam. Glentruin’s Daughter was unraced and like Lochlaggen is now being bred from. Sabor’s Part SABOR, who Was by Fowlingpiece, produced several winners including Crubenmore, Enwood, Linwood, Corban and Jedburgh. Enwood, who was got by Woodend, proved herself one of the best three-year-old fillies to race in Southland. At that age she won seven races and was four times placed. Crubenmore also proved herself a useful mare. Sabor died two years ago. Both Celerity II and Spean Bridge are still being bred from. Celerity II was first bred from in 1934 and her first foal Boswell, now a five-year-old stallion by Balboa, is an outstanding type and one of the most promising young stayers in commission at the present time. She has also a fine type of three-year-old filly by Irish Lancer yet to race. Celerity II was one of the very few Gainsborough mares ever imported to this country. Spean Bridge’s only representative to race so far is Auctor, a gelding by Balboa, who has shown useful handicap form. Besides these imported mares and fillies

from some of them Mr Chisholm is also breeding from a few other mares on his own behalf.

Both Siegfried and Salmagundi have been widely patronized this season and the collection of brood mares and foals at the stud at present is one of the finest ever assembled at a stud in Southland. A representative of The Southland Times was recently given the opportunity to inspect the stock on the farm and the condition of the stallions, mares and foals is a credit to those in charge.

MR Chisholm has five yearling fillies by Salmagundi from his own mares as well as one gelding. The fillies are out of Lochlaggen (by Woodend from Glentruin), Enwood (Wood-end-Sabor), Royal Emblem (an Aus-tralian-bred mare by Emblematic), Spean Bridge (imp.), and Tatarepo (by

Solferion from Hineamaru). Lochlaggen’s filly is an outstanding type for a first foal and some interest is being shown in the stud career of this mare. The Enwood filly is also a first foal and shows a lot of quality. The gelding is from Balia Salla, a Balboa mare from Orderdown. Two three-year-olds on the farm are well grown and have been well done by. Both are by Irish Lancer, one being a gelding from Tatarepo and the other a filly from Celerity 11. Salmagundi THE purchase of Salmagundi in Australia two seasons ago and Siegfried last year were important steps in the history of the thoroughbred industry in Southland. Never in the history of the province have two such proved and successful stallions been identified with the activities of blood stock breeding in the district. This has been realized by breeders not only in Southland, but in most parts of the South Island as well as the North Island, and mares have been sent to the two sires named from all parts. Salmagundi’s oldest progeny in Southland are now yearlings while the current season is the first that Siegfried has been available to breeders here. Salmagundi was got by Phalaris, the successful son of Polymelus and' a particularly dominant scion of a great line of sires that are on top of the world today. Phalaris was the sire of Fairway, leading sire in England last year; Pharos, leading sire in England in 1931, while he is this year the sire of the dams of both first and second in the English Derby. Phalaris, who is from the famous Sunshine family, is from the same line as Martian, and Limond. Salamandra, the dam of Salmagundi, was got by St. Frusquin, winner of the Two Thousand Guineas, Eclipse Stakes, and £32,960 in stakes. St. Frusquin, who was by St. Simon, sired many champions. Salamandra won races up to one and three-quarter miles and was sold as a brood mare for 16,000 guineas. She was the dam of Salmon Trout, winner of the St. Leger and £15,000 in stakes; Salmon Leap, winner of the Goodwood Cup over two miles and five furlongs; King Salmon, winner of the Eclipse Stakes and £13,731 in stakes. Salmagundi proved himself in Australia by getting Humurah, winner of the Doncaster Handicap, Queensland Newmarket Handicap and other races. Other meritorious winners got by Salamagundi include Siren (winner of the V.R.C. Oaks and Manifold Stakes), Sal Volatile (winner of the Adriap Knox Stakes), Mince Pie (winner of the A.J.C. December Handicap, Bond Handicap, one mile and a-half, Rosehill Handicap 11 furlongs). Salamander (winner Tattersails Cup, Dangar Handicap, and so on), Irving (winner Carmichael Stakes, A.J.C. Edenson Park Handicap, Baybrook Handicap, Brunswick Stakes, Salisbury Handicap, Glenhuntly Handicap and Williamstown Easter Cup), and Prince Pam (winner of the Victoria Ottawa Stakes). It requires far more than ordinary racing merit to win the races named above In addition Salamagundi got many other winners of the far more than useful type. A sire is best judged by his stock and the high-class winners left by Salamagundi supply undeniable proof of merit. Siegfried DURING the bloodstock sales of last season Mr Chisholm was very fortunate in securing Siegfried and he will no doubt prove a most valuable addition to the Otautau Stud and, linked with Salamagundi should elevate the winning records of Southland sired stock to a very much higher plane than ever previously occupied. In fact, Southland breeders have never had such a golden opportunity to breed winners.

Siegfried represents the all-famous

Son-in-Law line from Fine Mist, a daughter of the English Derby winner Sunstar from Lorgnette by Isinglass —Galinne by Galopin. Son-in-Law, the sire of Siegfried, also got Beau Pere, Straightlace (£24,131), Foxlaw (£13,596), Rustom Pasha (£15,908), Trinidon (£14,000), Bosworth and a host of other high-class winners, who won 615 races worth £377,480 up to the end of last season in England. Siegfried got Wotan (Melbourne Cup), Essex (Great Northern Derby), Yours Truly (New Zealand Cup), Brunhild (New Zealand Oaks), Dunstan (Dunedin Champagne Stakes), Siegmund (Great Autumn Handicap, Wanganui Cup, W.R.C. Handicap), Siegift and Wilson, two high-class winners in Australia, Happy Landing, Flame Queen, Screen Star, Lockit, Lindrum, Lady Furst, Old Bill, Hagen,

Wagner and other good winners. Siegfried is closely related to Frawn, one of the best stayers in England, and as a successful representative of a dominant sire line should command great patronage. Siegfried is not a solitary success got by Son-in-Law, whose stock have bred on in all parts of the world. In addition to Siegfried he got Foxlaw, Bosworth, Apron, Empire Builder, Knight of the Garter, Parenthesis, Rustom, Pasha, Son and Heir, Trinidon, Winalot, The Winter King, Constant Son, Posterity, and for great success nearer home Beau Pere and Philamor.
