SCHOOL SPORTS

NORTHERN WAIAU DISTRICT SUCCESS OF PUKEMAORI A most successful sports nieeting and exhibition of work was held at the Orawia school by the schools of .the Northern Waiau District. Favoured by beautiful weather, the meeting, which was the first of its kind to be held in the district, proved an outstanding sucC£ The schools taking part were.—Birchwood, Clifden, Eastern Bush, Feldwick, Merrivale, Orawia, Otahu and Pukemaori. The sports were begun in the morning and continued till late in the afternoon, the long programme, in which more than 150 pupils participated, being carried through in an expeditious manner by the teachers of the various schools, aided by members of the committees and other willing helpers. A large number of parents inspected the exhibition of school work, a special feature of which was the arts and crafts section which demonstrated the ■n. ew trend in education since the abolition of the proficiency certificate. Interested spectators at the gathering were Messrs S. J. Irwin and J. G ; Gaspanch, members of the Southland inspectorate of primary schools. The champion school proved to be Pukemaori, whose children gave an excellent exhibition of athletics, showing evidence of careful coaching and training by their teacher, Mr R. Nimmo.
