SOUTHLAND’S LINK WITH CULLEYS
Southland has the distinction of having a link with Sir George Culley, one of the two brothers who evolved the Border Leicesters. Sir George’s granddaughter was the wife of Mr Robert Grieve, who was one of the first Border Leicester breeders in the province. Mr Grieve, whose property was at Oporo, began breeding Border Leicesters in 1874. There are many descendants of Mr and Mrs Grieve in Southland today and some of them have retained their connection with sheep farming.
