ROYAL CHAMPION CLYDESDALE

SUCCESS OF GORE EXHIBITOR .

MR ANDREW GRANT WINS IN FEMALE SECTION

Competent judges were\ unanimous m their praise of the Clydesdale horses that were paraded at the show. Munificent specimens of their breed, the Clydesdales strode majestically in the parade, and to the working farmer they were a centre of attraction. The townsman, too, must have been impressed with the vigorous and glossy appearance of these grand horses. _ The Royal champion stallion is a two-vear-old, Verdlea Anchor, which was bred and exhibited by Mr Alex Noble; of Gore. At the Gore show last week Mr Noble could not get better than third with his horse, but yesterday he scored a notable success against stronger competition Mr Andrew Grant, of Fairlie, a prominent Clydesdale breeder won the reserve championship with AUanaale Chatham (Desire-Craigie Ella), an aged horse. However, Mr Grant had a splendid win in the female section with his imported horse Dees Rosetta (Benedictine—Dunure Roseway), a four-year-old, who beat some very good mares for the Royal championship. The well-known Otama breeders, Logan Brothers, took the reserve female championship with Mossdale Lady Crest (Craigie Crest-Lady Mossdale), who was champion at Gore last week. FINE STAMP OF HORSE Verdlea Anchor, who is by Noble Anchor from May Hazelwood, is a fine stamp of animal, and a true natural goer, good at the ground, with splendid joints. The reserve champion, Allandale Chatham, a six-year-old, is a big weighty horse, and wearing well. There were four entries in the class for aged entires. Mr G. Wisely’s (Gore) Netherton Mac was included in the catalogue, but was not shown. The second in that class, ■from which came the reserve champion, was Mr R. W. Coubrough’s (Heriot) Crown Prince, a horse with a very good set of feet. Mr T. Carruthets’s (Middlemarch) Jolly Millar, winner of the three-year-old class, is a big useful sort of horse. Mr Andrew Carruthers’s (Middlemarch) Scotia, who won the yearling class, is a very good colt and ran the champion close for the Clydesdale medal for the best yearling or two-year-old colt bred by exhibitor. In the two-year-old class, in which there was keen competition, Verdlea Anchor was placed first and later the royal championship ribbon was placed round his neck. Avondale Macton, exhibited by Mr A. H. Gerrard (Wrights Bush), was second. * FEMALE CLASSES

The female classes were particularly strong and competition was well spread. According to the judge, Mr A. L. Bremer (Hawera), the quality was fat ahead of that seen at North Island

shows. The classes were well filled, particularly the dry mare and younger There were three absentees from the brood mare class, nine being entered and six shown. The winner, Mr Noble’s Verdlea Vera, is a fine typeof mare with particularly hard bones. The dry mares, both in numbers and m quality, were a particularly strong class. The winner was Mr Grant’s well-known Cawder Cup champion, Dees Rosetta, who moved to perfection and made a fine showing, greatly impressing the judge. This mare was later awarded the championship and was also selected as the best type of Clydesdale on the ground. Closely following the winner was Logan Bros.’ Mossdale Lady Crest, another outstanding mare. Four animals paraded in the three-year-old filly class, Mr Grant s Aliandale Gladys being placed first. She is a filly of excellent quality and moves well. Second to Mr Grant’s filly was Mr Andrew Carruthers’s recently imported filly Carrilac, who has been in New Zealand only five or six months. After she has become acclimatized she is bound to be prominent in New Zealand show rings. Mr J. Petrie’s Roselm, a good quality filly, was placed third. The two-year-old fillies, five of which were entered, were headed by Mr James McCallum’s Maretta, a filly of particularly good quality with exceptionally hard bone. Mr William Kirk’s Veritable was second. YEARLING FILLIES The yearling fillies were a particularly strong class, 11 animals coming before the judge. Mr Andrew Carruthers’s entries were placed first and third and Mr H. Kirk took second prize with Topping Lady. . , There was also a large entry in the class for filly or colt bred by the exhibitor. Mr McCallum’s previous wm-

ner, Maretta, secured another first award, Mr Andrew Carruthers taking second and third awards. Mr Carruthers’s entries in the previous class were placed first and second in the class for yearling fillies or colts bred by the exhibitor. Logan Bros, scored with Mossdale Lady Crest against strong competition in the class for mature mares born in New Zealand. This mare was also awarded the reserve championship. In the group sections there were also some outstanding displays, most of the awards going to horses that had been successful in previous classes. Among the working draughts, which were judged by Mr W. C. Wallace (Cambridge), the champion, Mr William Macdonald’s Sandy, was an outstanding horse with the weight and necessary qualities required for a working gelding. The reserve champion was found in the class for geH&igs bom since August 1, 1937. It wws a two-

year-old shown by L. Robertson and Sons (Waikoikoi). For his age he is of great size and well developed and he ran the champion very close. The judge considered that this horse had a very promising future. Mr Wallace said good quality was to be found all through the working draught classes, but some just lacked the substance that was looked for in working* horses. There were some fine animals in the general purposes section and they were well brought out. The horses in pairs for town work were nice and even and looked quite capable of doing the work required of them.
