COACHING FUND TO BE ESTABLISHED

ASSISTANCE FOR JUNIOR PLAYERS That any profits from the C grade tennis tournament conducted by tn, Southland Lawn Tennis Association form the nucleus of a junior coaching fund, was a decision made at a meeting of the executive of the association yesterday Mr J. S. Clarkson presided. , ... “Too much cannot be done foi junior tennis players and anything that is done now to assist them will result in the association being strengthened m later years,” said the secretary (Mr J. H. B. Scholefield). The profits of the successful C grade tournament might amount to about _£7 and he was of the opinion that this sum should form the nucleus of a junior coaching fund, with the idea of obtaining the services of a coach from Otago next year. The South Canterbury As sociation adopted a similar scheme last year, which was most successful. The standard of play of the juniors had improved considerably and any expenses had been outweighed by the advantages gained. If the scheme was introduced by the Southland Association he had no doubt that it would reflect on the standard of play in years to come. He thought some move should be ipade in this direction. Several members supported the suggestion and the motion, moved by Mr Scholefield, was carried. Mr Scholefield suggested that arrangements be left in his hands for a Town junior v. Western B match to be played either at Riverton or Otautau, with the object of fostering junior tennis m Invercargill. The secretary was instructed to ■write to the Waihopai, Invercargill and Collegiate clubs thanking them for the use of their courts during the C grade tournament.

SECONDARY SCHOOLS’ COMPETITION IMPROVED STANDARD OF PLAY The followin ' tables show the positions of the various secondary schools’ teams at the end of the inter-school tennis competition. The standard, of play reached has shown a decided improvement, this being more noticeable in the junior grade, where there are some outstanding girls and boys. Competition was keen, several matches ending with se' even, and one match concluding with sets and games even. Rain interfered with matches on several occasions so that it was necessary to play some of the matches during the veek instead of on Saturday morning. It is interesting to note that the monopoly enjoyed by the Southland Girls’ and Boys’ High Schools teams over the junior cups has at last ended. The Marist High School and "’echnical College A teams this year won the junior cups. In the senior competition the High School teams proved superior to the other teams, but it is interesting to note that the Boys’ High School C team, composed of younger boys, was stronger thar the High School A team. Beginning in 1940 the inter-schools competition will be held at the beginning of the year and the championship tournament the end of the year.
