The engagement is announced of Margaret Jean, second daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Dick, Waipango, and Douglas Lloyd, third son of Mrs G. V. Watkinson, Ermedale, and the late Mr Watkinson. Mrs J. C. Cook, Wilanda Downs, Ohai, has returned from a trip to the Centennial Exhibition and Auckland. Miss Wanaka Brown, Waimate, is the guest of Mrs J. R. McKenzie, Ocean View, Fortrose. Mr and Mrs James Thomson, Ohai, have returned from a tour including Auckland and Wellington. Mrs Downs Roberts, Gladbrook Station, is spending a few days at the Grand Hotel. Mrs Ralph Shand, Centre Bush, will arrive today to stay with her mother, Mrs V. A. Mehaffey, Grey street, for a few days.

Mrs M. J. Lister, Ettrick street, left last night for Napier, to attend the ordination to the priesthood of her son, Mr Hilary Lister. Mrs. A. Owen-Johnston and Miss Shirley Owen-Johnston left yesterday to spend a few days at The Rocks, Riverton.

Miss Helen Hargest, Rakauhauka, and Miss Ina Butson, Roslyn Bush, left by yesterday morning’s express for a holiday in Christchurch and Wellington.

Mrs F. B. Herbert, Heriot, is the guest of Mrs I. A. Arthur, Commodore Flats, Tay street, for show week.. She will be joined by Mr Herbert later in the week.

The marriage will take place in Dunedin at St. Mary’s Church, on December 20, of Miss Thelma Middleton and Major Purser, who is shortly 1 going overseas for military service. Miss Alison Rout, daughter of Mr H. E. Rout, Janet street, and the late Mrs Rout will leave at the end of January to do missionary work in

Mysore State, South India. Miss Rout has been doing midwifery work for the past six years in preparation for her work abroad. •

A social afternoon was spent on Saturday at Southend Croquet Green, when members met Mrs R. Brownlie after her visit to Great Britain. After afternoon tea, Mrs Shiels, president, welcomed Mrs Brownlie back and presented her with a bouquet of roses. During the afternoon a sealed competition was played, the winners being Mesdames Lawless and Gray. In the North of England the Princess Royal and her husband, the Earl of Harewood, who recently celebrated his fifty-seventh birthday, are hard at work. Their sons, Viscount Lascelles and the Hon. Gerald Lascelles, are setting an example to the local youth, for, starting at six every morning, they spend each hour of daylight helping local farmers getting their harvest They are both sturdy lads, helped partly by the’ games they play at Eton, and by their love of riding.
