MONDAY’S STREET PROCESSION
44 Affront To Dignity Of City” PERMISSION NOT GRANTED A protest against the procession being held along Tay and Dee. streets on Monday afternoon was voiced by councillors at the meeting of the Invercargill City Council last evening. “Who gave permission for that procession?” asked Cr A. W. Jones. “It was an affront to the dignity of the city and should not have been allowed.” The Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan): No one gave permission. Cr Jones: It was not very elevating.
The Mayor: I do not think the procession impressed many people. I think they regarded it in a humorous light. Cr Jones said that the men who were controlling the Royal Show were respectable citizens and they had been let down—the city also had been let down. The inspector should have taken action and stopped the procession, he added. The Town Clerk (Mr W. F. Sturman) said that no permission had been given. No application had been received and no objection was made. Cr R. T. Parsons supported Cr Jones and said that the behaviour of some of those in the procession was disgusting.
