R. Austin Freeman had to stop work on his new Dr Thorndyke manuscript in order to get his home ready for air raids. Dr Freeman lives in Gravesend where, he wrote to his American publishers, “some of the heaviest of air engagements” were expected. He had arranged, however, for one reasonably lighted room in which to work and he hoped “with luck” to finish the book by the end of the year. The title will be “Mr Polton Explains.”
