NEW BRIGHTON TROTS

FINE ART IN FIRM FAVOUR LAWN DERBY’S ATTEMPT ON MILE RECORD An attraction at the New Brighton Trotting Club’s meeting today will be Lawn Derby’s attempt to better the mile grass track record of 2min 0 2-ssec held by his half-brother Van Derby. Lawn Derby is reported to be in great order for his trial and if the New Brighton grass track is in fast order, lie should make a bold attempt against tire The chief event today will be the Mace Memorial Handicap, to be run over a mile and a-quarter. Several of the best pacers in commission are down to class while this race will also mark the reappearance of a former champion m Indianapolis, who is set to give away starts of up to 60yds. As. he has not had any recent racing it is extremely doubtful if he will be capable of such a task. Lawn Derby is to start off the same mark ds Indianapolis and he should hold the former champion safely. The favourite will no doubt be Fine Art, .who, however, will be opposed to two brilliant pacers in Great Jewel and Blair Athol. Fine Art can be relied on to make a great race of it all the way. Great Jewel has lost ground at the start of most of his races and while there is no questioning his brilliance he can allafford to lose ground in this company. RECORD HOLDER Blair Athol, who registered a world winning record for one mile and a-half in his last start, is one of the most reliable pacers in commission. He finished third in the New Zealand Cup and second to Fine Art on the second day of the Cup carnival. Fine Art may again hold him safely over the shorter journey. Jackaranda was twice second to Cantata at Forbury Park but otherwise his form has not much to recommend it in this company. Pot Luck’s fine form during the Cup carnival cannot be ignored as he is right back to his best. Blair Athol had little to spare from him the final day and Pot Luck is quite capable of reversing the placmgs. Gallant Knight beat Fine Art over this distance at Oamaru while he beat all but Icevus in the Free-For-All—form which has to be taken into serious account. In what promises to be a great race Fine Art, Blair Athol and Pot Luck will be in firm favour. FORM HORSES The following horses are in form: TRIAL HANDICAP.—Anna’s Voyage, Judgment, Great Mountain.
