GOLF, CRICKET AND BOWLING MATCHES

EASTERN SOUTHLAND AND INVERCARGILL MEET

The annual St. Andrew’s Day golf, cricket and bowling matches between the staffs of the Eastern Southland and Invercargill banks were played at Gore yesterday. The weather was ideal for all sport and an enjoyable day was spent in warm sunshine. At cricket the Invercargill team scored a fairly easy win, but the Eastern Southland golf team was superior. At bowls, the honours were even, each team winning one game. Results are:— CRICKET The cricket match was played on the hostel grounds and resulted in a win for the Invercargill team by a margin of 86 runs. The visitors had first use of the wicket and scored 202 runs. Mac Gibbon, who scored 57 runs, was top scorer for the side and. he gave a sound display. Hartley 37, Miller 32 and McGowan 26 not out, also batted well. Bowling for the Eastern Southland team Gladstone took five wickets for 48 runs. The Eastern team replied with 116 runs, Bogue, with 87 being the only batsman to reach double figures. Bogue was. in excellent form and gave a most impressive display. Miller, three for 45, and Mac Gibbon, three for 45, were the most successful bowlers for the Invercargill team.
