NEW ZEALAND UNIT IN ENGLAND
MR ORMOND WILSON IN RANKS (Received October 20, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, October 19. A New Zealand anti-tank unit, numbering 170, is encamping somewhere in England under the command of Major C. J. Duff, who, before the war, was New Zealand liaison officer with the War Office. The officers include Lieutenants J. H. Hall Kenny, B. B. Patterson and E. Blow. The rankers include Mr G. H. Ormond Wilson, former Labour member of Parliament for Manawatu. The unit trains separately, but is attached to a British training centre for administration purposes. Uniforms and equipment are drawn from British ordnance. Consequently it has no distinctive headgear. The crowd in the Strand was surprised to see the Royal car halt at New Zealand House and the King and Queen alight without ceremony. They were heartily cheered as they entered the sandbagged doorway. They were received by the High Commissioner (Mr W. J. Jordan) and Mrs Jordan. Their Majesties were keenly interested in the work of the various departments under war-time conditions. They afterwards visited India House. SUCCESSFUL FLIGHTS OVER GERMANY AIRCRAFT RETURN SAFELY (British Official Wireless) RUGBY, October 19. The Royal Air Force last night conducted successful reconnaissance flights over north-west Germany. The aircraft taking part reached their objectives and have all returned safely.
