WOMEN’S GOLF TOURNEY

Miss Gilkison Wins Stead Cup

GREAT MATCH WITH MRS ROBINSON

After a magnificent contest over 36 holes, Miss N. Gilkison (Invercargill) beat Mrs D. W. Robinson (Queen’s Park) by one hole in the final for the Stead Cup at Queen's Park golf links yesterday. The B grade final, which was decided over 18 holes, was won by Mrs S. Sutherland (Queen’s Park), who beat Mrs W. R. Cockburn (Riverton), also by one hole. In the B grade semi - finals Mrs Sutherland beat Mrs S. R. Lowden (Invercargill), 3 and 1, and Mrs Cockburn beat Mrs J. F Skedden (Queen’s Park), 3 and 2. The weather yesterday was fine after rain during the night and there was only a light westerly wind.

THE CUP FINAL Not only was the match between Miss Gilkison and Mrs Robinson extremely close all the way, but the standard of golf remained high throughout. It was a great match. At the end of nine holes they were all square and when the morning round finished the position was unchanged. When 27 holes had been played they were still square. Fortunes fluctuated over the last _ n ™ e holes, Miss Gilkison taking the lead for the last time at the thirty-fifth, where she holed a long putt for a birdie 2. In the morning they both reached the turn in 46, Miss Gilkison losing the third and ninth through playing out of bounds. Good golf was played over the second nine holes. Miss Gilkison took the lead with a birdie 3 at the sixteenth, where she put her second inches from the pin, but lost it at the next hole to Mrs Robinson’s birdie 2. Miss Gilkison was back in 40 and Mrs Robinson in 41, giving them rounds of 86 and 87 respectively. With the match all square they had everything to play for when they went out after lunch. Miss Gilkison began well, winning the first hole with a good 4. The next two were halved, then Mrs Robinson had two wins with bogey figures. Miss Gilkison promptly retaliated with a bogey 4 and a bogey a at the sixth and seventh and wasi 1 up again. She was unable to do better than 6 at the eighth and lost that to Mrs Robinson’s 5, and when the ninth was halved in sound 5 s the match was square and it was anybody’s game. Miss Gilkison was out in 44, Mrs Robinson taking two more. A KEEN BATTLE The match was proving intensely interesting to the gallery, as first one and then the other notched a win. A bogey 4 won the tenth for Miss Gilkison and 4’s halved the next. Mrs Robinson rolled in a long putt for a birdie 2 at the twelfth and again the match was square. Neither made the semblance of a mistake at Tipperary, the longest hole on the women’s card, which was halved in s’s. A birdie 4 to Mrs Robinson at the fourteenth gave her the lead, but she lost it at the very next hole, whore Miss Gilkison had a 5. The sixteenth was halved in s’s and the result was still in doubt. When both found the green with their tee shots at the short seventeenth another half seemed likely, but Miss Gilkison found the hole with her long putt to become dormy. Mrs Robinson went very close to getting the half. The last hole was halved in bogey s’s and Miss Gilkison was the winner of as good a match as anyone could wish to see. At no stage during the 36 holes was there more than one hole between them. Miss Gilkison had 83 for the afternoon round and Mrs Robinson 85—a very high standard indeed, especially as the pressure was on all the way. B GRADE FINAL

The B grade final was also a good match. Mrs Sutherland was 2 up at the fourth, but lost the fifth, seventh and eighth, and was 1 down at the turn. Mrs Sutherland was allowed to win the short twelfth with a 4 and became 1 up with a win in 6 to 7 at the fifteenth. Mrs Cockburn squared the match with a 4 at the seventeenth, but could not match Mrs Sutherland’s 5 at the last hole. The best cards returned in the Canadian foursomes yesterday morning were: Miss J. Andrews and Mrs Young, 106-33-73; Mrs G. E. Glennie and Miss M. Crawford, 95-19-76. Putting competitions were won by Mrs D. W. Stalker and Mrs G. E. Glennie. At the conclusion of the tournament the prizes were presented by Mrs D. W. Stalker, who apologized for the unavoidable absence of the president of the Queen’s Park Ladies’ Club, Mrs F. H. Hughes. STOUT CUP FINAL In the final of the Stout Cup competition at Queen’s Park, for players with handicaps from 20 to 24, E. Batchelor defeated T. J. Dwyer, 6 and 5. Both players started rather shakily, but the play improved as the game progressed. Batchelor’s play on the greens was very sound; his putting would not have disgraced a scratch player. It was

in this department of the game that Dwyer failed. Often with a stroke in hand, he would lose the hole because of weak approaching and putting.
