HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS

ANNUAL MEETING OF ASSOCIATION MISS BASSTIAN RETIRES FROM PRESIDENCY The annual meeting of the Southland Girls’ High-School Old Girls’ Association was held last evening in the Southland Women’s Club, when Miss G. Basstian presided over a fair attendance. . Miss Basstian reported that during the year Miss Janet Pack resigned from the position of secretary and Miss Zoe Smith took over the position. The success of the jubilee celebrations had been unqualified. A presentation to Miss Budd, former teacher at the school, had been made, and two travel talks by Miss M. T. Crofts had been enjoyed. The success of the ball this year was mentioned; it had been held in conjunction with the Southland Boys High School Old Boys’ Association. The formation of a branch of the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association in Christchurch was reported Two life members had been elected, these being Mrs Frame and Mrs Cameron. The national register for emergency work had been well supported by old girls, many attending the first aid and motor mechanics’ classes. Miss Basstian announced the healthy state of the balance-sheet, and that the slight fall in subscriptions had been more than balanced by the credit from the jubilee celebrations. She praised the committee that had planned and carried out the jubilee arrangements. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patroness, Mrs J. N. Armour (re-elected); president, Mrs A. Derbie; vice-presidents, Mesdames Robbie, Hawke, Barnsdale, Deaker. Misses Roscoe, G. Basstian, M. T. Crofts, Mackenzie, Faulkner, Smyth, A. Eastwood and Payne; joint secretaries, Miss W. England and Miss M. McKay; treasurer, Miss R. Reid; representative on National Council of Women, Mrs Barnsdale; committee, Misses M. Crawford, J. Hay, J. Poole, L. Watson, Z. Smith, P.

Sutton, R. Henderson, D. Washer, M. Gilbert and Mrs Munnings. Magazine representatives: Miss Joan Parfitt (Wellington), Miss L. Watson, local; Christchurch and Dunedin members to be appointed. Honorary auditors, Misses H. and V. Jamieson. A recommendation was made that donations should be made to sports bodies organized by former pupils. A reminder was given that the keep fit classes to start next week would be a benefit to all.

Miss Basstian, retiring president, thanked all members for their help and co-operation during her term of office and expressed the great pleasure she had derived from the association

Mrs Robbie, on behalf of the members, conveyed to Miss Basstian the gratitude they all felt and congratulated her on the success of her presidency. Supper was served and a social hour enjoyed. '
