LIEUTENANT SAVES TWO SHIPS
(Received October 12, 8.5 p.m.)
LONDON, October 12. A gallant Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve lieutenant at a West of England port has saved two damaged merchant ships on successive days. On the first occasion he sightted a large mechantman off the shore, sinking slowly. He went to the scene and found the ship deserted. He then called for volunteers and managed to pass a towing line and thus beach the vessel at the harbour entrance.
The next day he hastened to the rescue of another merchantman which was sinking as the result of a mine explosion. He picked up survivors, then clamberdd aboard as the ship was heeling over and cut the anchor cable, enabling her to be towed to the shore and beached.
