INCREASE IN COASTAL FREIGHT RATES
(United Press Association) WELLINGTON, October 12. ' It is announced that from today (Thursday) New Zealand coastal freight rates have been increased by five per cent. Recently, the freight rates to Australia and the Pacific Islands were increased by 10 per cent, and those to the Pacific Coast ports of Canada and the United States of America by 20 per cent.
Advice was received by the- council of the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce from the Union Steam Ship Company yesterday that coastal freight rates, except to Gisborne, were increased, making general cargo to Wellington £l/6/6 a ton and to Napier and Auckland £l/9/- a ton. The increase does not apply to wheat, flour, timber and motor-cars.
