Intoxicated While In Charge Of Car

LICENCE CANCELLED FOR 18 MONTHS

Pleading guilty in the Magistrate s Court before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M., yesterday to being intoxicated. while in charge of a car, Edward Ritchie p“P?o, a married man, aged 27, was fined ilo, in default seven days’ imprisonment. His driving licence was cancelled, and he was prohibited from obtaining another for 18 months. The accused was represented by Mr J. C. Pram. Sergeant S. King said that about 7 p.m. on Saturday the Transport Department’s inspector, Mr J. C. Edwards, was patrolling the North road when his attention was drawn to a car being driven for about 100 yards on the wrong side of the road. It was going in a southerly direction, and while, the inspector was following it it took an erratic turn into Galway street. He decided to stop the car, and he found that the owner was under the influence of liquor. Climo admitted that he had been to Bluff and had had several drinks. The accused was then taken to the Police Station where he was certified by a doctor as being unfit to drive 3 Mr Train said that the accused lived in Galway street and when he was burning into the street he was stopped by the inspector. Unfortunately, through restriction of work in garages he was put off and was unemployed. He had been to Bluff to see if he could get work on the waterfront, and while there he had picked up a friend who told him that he was going to enlist. He took him into town and after his friend had enlisted they went to WallaCetown. They were there only half an hour and the accused said he had only three or four beers. He was a married man, with one child, and counsel asked the Court to extend what leniency it could. The accused bore a good record and had never been in trouble before.
