Mr W. Grieve returned to Invercargill by the express last night. Mr Russell Brown, cable sub-editor of The Southland Times, who leaves tomorrow morning for Burnham military camp, yesterday received a presentation from the literary staff. The presentation of a wristlet watch was made by the editor, Mr R. Lund, who referred to the thoroughness and efficiency of Mr Brown’s work and expressed the hope that he would be able to return to his desk before long. Mr Brown replied. Mr D. Wishart was elected president of the Southland Anglers’ Club at the annual meeting last night. The death of Mr W. Checketts, a member of the Southland Anglers’ Club, was referred to at the annual meeting of the club last night and it was decided to send a letter, of sympathy to the relations. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect. Mr I. D. Blair, who left New Zealand in August to study abroad under the terms of a Macmillan Brown Research Scholarship in Agriculture, arrived in London on October 2. Lieutenant-Commander J. C. Elworthy, Royal Navy (retired), who was an aide-de-camp to Lord Bledisloe, has been temporarily appointed to the New Zealand naval forces.'
