OTAUTAU CLUB’S MEETING

Wardress In Favour For Washdyke FLAGMAN AN EARLY PROSPECT Acceptances for the Gore meeting close on Monday. Nominations for the Banks Peninsu.a meeting close tomorrow. A. E. Ellis

A. E. Ellis will be back from Australia to ride at the Wellington spring meeting. Disdain Last week at Awapuni Disdain beat Laughing Lass over six furlongs in Imin 17£sec. Named The three-year-old filly by Iliad from Set Sail has been named Southern Sail. Officials Appointed Mr J. A. White, jun., has been appointed handicapper for the Otautau Racing Club’s annual fixture on November 4 and Mr T. Marshall will act as starter. Early Favourite Wardress is likely to be a firm early favourite for the Teschemaker Handicap at Washdyke on Saturday. She won in her first appearance in open company at Geraldine and has worked well since. Stud Items Spearmaid, the dam of Nigger Boy and Spanish Lad, is to be mated with Salmagundi. Francolm, the darn of Nightwings, Dark Flight and Goid Flight, is heavy in foal to Winning Hit and will be served with Salmagundi. Australian Trip Saki, who promises to have a good season as a four-year-old, was sent over to Melbourne recently, where he is now being trained for Mr J. Jameson by M. McGrath. Tenth Winner

Winning Rival was the tenth horse to win the Dunedin Guineas m the Clifford colours, and was the third McLean Stakes winner from the stable to capture the Guineas a year later. Retired

Astral Flash has been retired from racing and will be mated with Siegfried this season. The Colonel Cygnus mare was only lightly raced, but she performed well and last season she won two races and was four times placed. She is out of the Paper Money mare, Flicker. In The Limelight

Night March’s progeny have been winning frequently lately, Gay Parade, Nightwings, Russian Ballet, Night Eruption, Merrymarch and Nightdress all having won one or more races since the season began.

Only Just Eligible The five races Master Dingle won last season were worth £495, so Saturday’s success takes his winnings to £615, and in future will only be eligible for nomination in- open class. Master Dingle will, however, be able to run out his hack race engagements at Timaru on Saturday. An Early Prospect

Flagman had not had a race since the winter meeting at Wingatui until he started in the Telegraph Handicap on Saturday. He was up with the leaders all the way and only beaten in the last few strides for third money by Silver Streak. Flagman is engaged in the open six furlongs at Washdyke on Saturday, and should be improved by the race he had at Wingatui. Related to Sasanof

The Central Otago-owned mare, Roseileana, who was having her first race on Saturday, showed a lot of pace, and should be worth following when a little more seasoned. Her dam, Ileana, is by Kilbroney from Ukaine, the dam of the Melbourne and New Zealand Cup winner, Sasanof. Train Arrangements Special train arrangements have been made for the Gore spring meeting. A train stopping at Woodlands, Edendale and Mataura will leave Invercargill at 10.30 a.m. on the Saturday, returning after the last race. On v the Monday, a special train, stopping where required will leave Invercargill at 10.10 a.m. and a non-stop train will leave at 11 a.m. The Otautau Meeting The programme for the Otautau Racing Club’s annual fixture on November 4 was published yesterday. With Easter falling earlier than usual next year the club had little alternative to select a date in the spring, and Southland trainers can be relied on to give full support, to the fixture. The Otautau Cup, run over one mile and a-quarter, is worth £l2O, and the Macaulay Memorial Handicap, run over a mile, £lOO. The steeplechase has been replaced by the O’Brien Memorial Highweight Handicap, of £lOO, over a mile, and at this time of the year this race should fill well. Two hack events will be run over seven furlongs and six furlongs respectively. Nominations close on October 20, weights will appear on October 24 and acceptances on October 27. Expensive Tactics The conditions of the Randwick Plate, won by Royal Chief on Saturday, clearly state that unless the race is run in 3min 35sec or under, the prize will be reduced to £625, and the second and third moneys accordingly. This condition was attached to the race a few years ago, to guard against a slow pace being established over the greater part of the’journey, and the race resolving itself into a sprint home. It is therefore difficult to conceive that experienced riders like Bartie and Munro should • not have realized the position. A reduction of £625 is a serious penalty to suffer, especially so in the case of the trainer and rider, whose percentages would be cut by half. Royal Chief’s win will bring him into stronger favour for the New Zealand Cup. The Stud Season Several interesting foalings are reported from the Otautau Stud. Miss Redowa has a filly by Salmagundi and Honest Maid a filly by the same sire. Both mares will be mated with Siegfried. Miss Redowa’s only representative to race so far is Wild Coon. Corn Queen (the dam of Fiord) has a filly by Iliad and is booked to Siegfried. Homedale has a filly by Siegfried and is to be mated with the same sire again. Homedale is an Australian-bred mare by Rossendale from Hasten Home. She won the Moonee Valley Cup in 1931. Cancer) has also a filly by Salmagundi.

has a filly by Salmagundi, and Balia Salla (Balboa-Orderdown) a colt by the same sire. Linwood (the dam of Gay lancer) has also a filly by Salmagundi. An interesting booking to Siegfried is Gobble, a mare by Tea Tray from Fulsome, by Absurd from Eulogy, who founded one of the finest families known Lancer) has also a filly by Salmagundi. Siegfried are in great health, and both promise to be widely patronized this season.
