PROTEST MADE BY CLERGYMAN

SPIRITUAL ASPECTS OF POLITICS

RIGHT TO COMMENT FROM - PULPIT (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, October 10. The cutting off of an address being broadcast from St. Matthew’s Church on September 21 by the Rev. Gladstone Hughes led to a protest in the Auckland Presbytery tonight. “I think it is time we stood up to these things,” said Mr Hughes. He had been informed, he said, that ministers were not allowed to make any comments on politics or international affairs. They all agreed with the principle that the pulpit was not the place to discuss party politics, or, perhaps, the intricacies of international affairs, but it raised the right to comment on the moral and spiritual aspects of politics and international affairs.
