SUCCESS OF PAST YEAR

HIGH SCHOOL OLD GIRLS

MANY ATTEND DIAMOND JUBILEE FUNCTION

A successful year is reviewed in the twenty-first annual report of the Southland Girls’ High School Old Girls’ Association to be presented at the annual meeting tomorrow. “Great interest was taken in the diamond jubilee celebrations which were held during the week-end of March 25,”. states the report. “A large and energetic committee was responsible for the outstanding success of the celebrations. On the Saturday afternoon a garden party took place at the school where, after a welcome by Miss A. Eastwood, a short concert was staged by the present pupils. A tennis tournament was held, and ori the lawn the present pupils assisted by providing folk dancing and drill. A record attendance at the jubilee dinner held at Elmwood Garden on the Saturday evening, contributed largely to the success of the function. A church parade at First Presbyterian Church on the Sunday night was also well attended by past and present pupils. “At the end of the first term when Miss A. M. Budd retired from the staff of the school a social evening was held in her honour. Miss Budd was presented with a handbag from the association and received best wishes for a happy retirement. “In an effort to stimulate the interest of the various sports bodies attached to the association,' a trump whist evening was held on June 25 and, though the attendance was good, the representation of the hockey, basketball and cricket clubs was not very large. However, we take this opportunity of congratulating the Rata Basketball Club on winning the first grade competition, King’s Birthday competition and The News Shield, and also the Ex-High Hockey Club on its success in winning the local competition and the Dey Cup. COMBINED BALL “This year the Old Girls’ Association combined with the Old Boys’ Association and held a combined ball in the Country Club on June 25. This proved an outstanding success, both socially and financially. Nine former pupils of the school made their debut, being presented by Miss Eastwood to Miss G. Basstian, president of the Old Girls’ Association. It is hoped that combined functions may be held again in the near future. “We are pleased to report the formation of a branch of the association in Christchurch, mainly due to the enthusiasm and energy of Miss M. McKie. The first official gathering took the form of a dinner party at the Federal Hotel when, the president, Miss Samuel, ..received; farmer pupils of the school now resident in that city. “A large number of former pupils of the school have availed themselves of tire opportunity to attend the first aid classes being' conducted in the city. The association has also expressed its willingness to the Mayor of Invercargill (Mr J. R. Hanan) to co-operate in any move which may be made' in the matter of national emergency. “Our financial position is particularly sound, the healthy condition of our balance-sheet being mainly due to the success of the jubilee celebrations,” ended the report.
