ON INVERCARGILL TRACKS

Colonel French Sent North SEVERAL NEWCOMERS IN WORK Nominations for the Gore meeting close on October 2. Nominations for the Dunedin spring meeting close next Tuesday. Colonel French Colonel French was sent north during the week to race at the Ashburton County meeting on Saturday. If T. J. Boyle is unfit to take the ride R. J. Mackie will have the mount. Recovered High Glee has recovered from the unsoundness that troubled him recently and he is again in work at Wingatui. At Avondale C. G. Goulsbro will ride Tidewaiter in his engagements at the Avondale meeting and R. W. McTavish will be on Emdale and Gladyney. Hurdling Career It is understood that when next produced Milford will race in new_ colours. The Anomaly gelding has been schooled in recent weeks and his future racing may be as a hurdler. Avondale Scratchings Race Away and Radio Call have been withdrawn from all engagements at the Avondale Jockey Club’s meeting. From Spanish Maid At Wingatui Mr J. Richardson has a likely type of three-year-old gelding by Paladin from Spanish Maid in work. Spanish Maid was got by Balboa from Miss Signal, and dam* of Signaller. For Wingatui

Wild Coon has been kept in work at Invercargill and the two-year-old is to make his first appearance in public in the McLean Stakes at Wingatui next month. He was allowed to forfeit his engagements in the John Grigg Stakes because of a slight cold. Aspire's Progress

Aspire has come to hand in good style for J. A. Rowland and the Weathervane mare promises to be well forward for early meetings. Her trainer has had to exercise caution with her as there is a suspicion about one of her forelegs, and later it may give some trouble. Recommissioned

Pink Bond has been taken up again and she is carrying plenty of condition at present. Although she was placed on four occasions last season the Pink Coat mare failed to win a race, but she showed sufficient promise in winning as a two-year-old, to suggest that she will be a better mare this season. Remembo Resumes A recent addition to R. E. McLellan’s team is Remembo, who has been spelling in recent weeks. The Balboa gelding has done well during his absence from the tracks and is carrying more condition than formerly. Remembo, who is a brother to Membo and halfbrother to Paladino and Nightcalm, has quite failed to live up to the successful record of his family. As a five-year-old last season he was produced on 20 occasions but has yet to break his novice status. He displayed promise in some of his races but did not always reproduce it.

Newcomers R. E. McLellan has two newcomers to his team in a three-year-old colt by Irish Lancer from Te Anau Maid and a three-year-old filly by Irish Lancer from Morse Signal. Both were worked for a time last season and are in excellent order to begin work. The Irish Lancer—Te Anau Maid colt has grown into an upstanding juvenile and as a half-brother to Milford and Salmo Salar he comes from an excellent family. The filly from Morse Signal ranks as a half-sister to Trebleack, Doubleack and Waitoru, and she, too, is a likely type. Gay Circle The attractively-bred young horse Gay Circle is advertised for sale as a stallion, and can be obtained at a modest price. Gay Circle was a good winner in Australia, and as a shapely, well-bred horse, may prove valuable - for the stud. He was got by Gay Shield from Nucleus, by Lucullus—Persis, by Marble Arch—Latona, by Phoebus Apollo, from Antelope, by Apremont— Miss Kate, and hence belongs to the same family as Phar Lap. Gay Shield was got by Gay Crusader from Cinna, the dam of the very successful sire Beau Pere.

From Tea Party About seven or eight two-year-olds are in work at Invercargill and while Noko, who is to contest the John Grigg Stakes on Saturday, and Wild Coon, are the only two to be raced at early meetings, several others have shaped well in the sprint tasks given them. F. W. Ellis has a fine type of col* by Niggei - Minstrel from Tea Party a mare who displayed brilliant form in the little racing she did. Tea Party was got by Tea Tray from Eager Eyes, who also produced Listening Post, a leading handicap winner in Southland a few years back. The Nigger Minstrel colt is the most likely of Tea Party’s stock so far produced and in a sprint task last week handled himself well and is just the type to make an early name for himself. He comes of a family noted for speed and he should not disgrace it. The first of Tea Party’s produce was Marina Peak, a filly by British Empire, but she did show sufficient promise to race and was last season mated with Nigger Minstrel, to whom she is due to foal. For Melbourne The well-known Auckland jockey R. W. McTavish intends leaving for Melbourne shortly. Overtures were made to McTavish on his recent holiday there, and with some good mounts offering, he has decided, for the time being, to follow' his calling in Australia. McTavish is one of New Zealand’s most accomplished riders and with average luck he should do well. The ranks of jockeys in Auckland will be the weaker for his departure. Dhoti Arrives Dhoti, one of the three horses to be sent to Australia by the Duke of Kent, has arrived in Melbourne. Dhoti is said to be an attractive chestnut, perhaps light of bone, but compact and stoutly built. Though he had a rough trip, Dhoti travelled so well that it is believed he Has put on two inches of girth since he left England. He will never be a really 1 big horse, but he

measures 15 hands 2 inches, while he has a splendid neck and shoulder. His legs appear sound, though he gave his off knee a slight bump on the trip. He was unbeaten as a win-, ning three races in good company, but he failed this season.
