FERRY STEAMER HAS MISHAP
RUDDER STOCK BREAKS (United Press Association) NELSON, September 13. A mishap to her steering gear delayed the ferry steamer Matangi on the run from Wellington to Nelson last night. The Matangi left Wellington at 7.30 and at 53 minutes past midnight the vessel failed to answer her helm, the rudder appeared to be swinging loosely and she was completely out of control. The steamer Kaitoa, bound from Nelson to Wellington, stood by the Matangi until they arrived at the French Pass at 4 o’clock this morning. At slack water at 6 o’clock, the Matangi, with the Kaitoa alongside, negotiated the French Pass. The Kaitoa then proceeded on its way to Wellington and the Matangi came on to Nelson under her own power, negotiating the harbour entrance and swinging in at the wharf by the use of her engines. She arrived at 9.50 o’clock. On examination it was found that the rudder stock was broken. Repairs were proceeded with, but it will be two or three days before the vessel is ready to take up her running.
