SMART TRIALS AT RICCARTON

DICTATE’S USEFUL EFFORT (Special to The Times) CHRISTCHURCH, September 12. Conditions were very favourable for training at Riccarton today and practically all of the horses engaged at Ashburton on Saturday were galloped on the No. 6 grass which provided fast going. Winning Rival was going better than Great Swoop over the final stages of five furlongs in Imin 3 l-ssec, the last three in 38 4-ssec. The Wrecker covered a mile in Imin 50sec. He has done well in recent weeks and should race prominently in his first open engagement at Ashburton. Dinah Dhu and Turncoat sprinted three furlongs in 37 2-ssec and Shikari and Wild Fox recorded 38sec Sovereign Lady attracted attention by galloping six furlongs in Imin 16 2-5 sec, each three in 38 l-ssec. Spartan and Grey Night followed, in Imin 16 2-ssec. Others over this distance included Benevolent and Knight Commander Imin 17 2-ssec, Ferriby and Prudent Prince Imin 17 2-ssec, Wardress and Wagner Imin 17 3-ssec and Strip and Waka Imin 18sec.

DICTATE SHOWS UP Dictate again impressed by holding Kilrobe safe over five furlongs in Imin 2sec, the last three in 37 l-ssec. Others over this distance included Lady Don Imin 4sec, Trasimene and Princess Minerva Imin ssec, and Jan Ridd and Complexion Imin 4 2-ssec, while Lady Leigh ran five furlongs on the plough in Imin 3sec. There were some smart half mile sprints, Great Flight and Scold finished abreast in 50 2-ssec, Don’t Forget beat Whiphand in 50 4-ssec, and Skyrena finished in front of Glenogil • and My Abbey in 50sec, time that was equalled by Boloyna and St. Cloud. King’s Toast and Lord Midas took 50 2-ssec, Sir Gladstone and Muriel 51 l-ssec, Aggravate and Lockit 51 1-5 sec and Great Memory beat Captain Bruce in 53sec.

Roy Bun gave Cape Gabo and Studley Royal a good break in a mile task and the trio finished in the order named in imin 44sec.

Night Dress and Capricious covered seven in-Imin 31 3-ssec.

DEFAULTER’S TRAINER DENIES RUMOURS TROUBLE DESCRIBED AS TRIFLING SYDNEY, September 12. His trainer, F. Roberts, discounts the stories that Defaulter is seriously lame. He said that he believed the trouble was so trifling that the horse would be over it in a day or two.
