PRESENTATION OF AWARDS

SOUTHLAND BOYS’ AND

GIRLS’ CLUBS

MANY CHILDREN RECEIVE CERTIFICATES

The presentation of awards to members of the Southland Boys’ and Girls’ Clubs Association in the Invercargill city district took place in the United Friendly Societies’ hall yesterday afternoon. Mr B. P. Mansfield, president of the association, presided and certificates were presented to the children by the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan), Mr S. Rice, chairman of the Southland Education Board, Mr S. J. Irwin and Mr A. Bringans, Invercargill school inspectors. The organization of the association was splendid, said Mr Hanan. The work was done voluntarily. by the officials and part of their aim was to develop certain traits in the character of the boys and girls. He paid a tribute to the work of Mr Mansfield and referred to the energetic manner in which he fulfilled his duties.

They had excellent parks in their city, but it was not the reserves that made a city beautiful, but the gardens in the homes.

Gardening was the oldest occupation in the world and he hoped that the boys and girls present would endeavour to get their friends to take up the projects, said Mr Rice. They should not allow anyone to destroy trees wantonly. Their lives were very short compared with the life of trees and when a tree was destroyed it often meant the end of 100 years of existence. The future success of the movement lay with the children in that they could influence other girls and boys to take part in a project, said Mr Irwin. He was very pleased with the progress that had been made, but would like to see even more children interested in the projects. The following certificates were presented:— FLOWER PLOT PROJECT Certificates of special merit.—Ethel Robertson, Verdon Turner, June Gray, Betty Gregory, Betty Allen, June Fletcher, Beverley Moffat.
