Mr J. Scholefield, LL.M., has joined Mr F. G. Hall-Jones, barrister and solicitor, of Invercargill. Mr Scholefield, who is the eldest son of Dr Guy H. Scholefield, Chief Parliamentary Librarian, received his early education at Cheltonia College, London, and under Dr G. H. Uttley at the Wairarapa High School, of which he was dux in 1927. He joined Messrs Cooke and Watson, solicitors in Wellington, and studied law at Victoria University College. He gained the degree of LL.B, in 1933 and was admitted to the Bar in 1934. At the end of that year he left Wellington to become managing clerk to W. D. Campbell, Crown solicitor at Timaru, and remained there until coming to Invercargill, He gained the degree of LL.M, in 1936 with equivalent honours. In 1935 he won the Bowen Prize, which is allotted every second year by the University of New Zealand for competitive work on a set subject, a prize which his father won about 30 years before. For two years and a-half, Mr Scholefield was lecturer in law at the Timaru Technical College. He was a member of the manage committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association. Reference to the death of Mr T. W. Hartwell was made by the Mayor (Mr J. R. Hanan) at last night’s meeting of the Invercargill City Council. Mr Hanan said that Mr Hartwell was leading linesman on the staff of the Electricity Department, and was the victim of an accident on July 13, from which he died on July 28. Mr Hartwell had been in the service of the department since August 4, 1914, and was a returned soldier. A motion of sympathy was passed, the council standing in silence.

Captain L. Vaughan Morgan, formerly second naval member of the New Zealand Naval Board, has been appointed to command the Royal Sovereign in the 2nd Battle Squadron, Home Fleet, in succession to Captain J. W. S. Dorling. Mr T. Templeton, Fortification, has returned after visiting Christchurch for the Grand National meeting.
