WOMEN’S DIVISION

BRYDONE BRANCH The monthly meeting of the Brydone branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held at the school house Mrs Edwards presiding. The competition, a peanut bird from nine peanuts and six pins, resulted: Mrs A. Mitchell 1, Mrs Edwards 2. Best bloom, Mrs W. Coker 1, Mrs J. Coker 2.

THORNBURY BRANCH

The Thornbury branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union celebrated its ninth birthday by holding a social afternoon in the local hall. There was a big attendance of members and friends. The president, Mrs Linscott welcomed all the visitors. The programme consisted of recitations by Mrs McNaughton, violin solos by Miss Nicholson, vocal solos by Mrs R. Lindsay and Miss M. McLean, humorous musical monologues by Mrs S. Mitchell, and a playette by Mrs Buchan, Misses N. Fallow and M. McLean, and Mr A. Lee. Mrs R. Lindsay. Miss Edie and Miss McNeill acted as accompanists. A prize for the member with the big-

gest family went to Mrs Neas, of Waikiwi. After the serving of afternoon tea, the nine candles on the birthday cake were lighted by the president, Mrs Linscott and extinguished by Mrs J. Fallow,'one of the first presidents. Mrs Neas then cut the cake. The roll call was answered by visitors from Drummond, Fairfax, Isla Bank, Tussock Creek, Riverton,' Waikiwi, Wrights Bush and Waianiwa women’s institutes, who extended congratulations from their branches. Messages from several other branches were read by the secretary.

DIPTON BRANCH

The monthly meeting of the Dipton branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union was held in the library room when Mrs J. S. McDonald presided over a fair attendance. Apologies for absence were received from several members. A motion of sympathy with a member who has suffered a bereavement was passed. The motto was: “A kind word that falls today may bear fruit tomorrow.” The roll call, “What I most like doing on a wet day,” was well responded to. Invitations were received to the birthdays of the Kauana and Otautau brr -.ches. A parcel of disabled soldiers’ goods was on sale at the meeting. Arrangements for the birthday party to be held on September 6 were completed. A social competition was won by Miss E. Milligan. The monthly competitions resulted: Best bloom: Mrs Giles 1, Mrs Mcßae 2, Mrs A. Lindsay 3. Men’s knitted socks: Mrs Giles. Oat cakes: Mrs Mcßae. Hostesses were: Mesdames B. Adam, H. Anderson, Miss E. Milligan. The members of the Farmers’ Union and Young Farmers’ Club were guests at supper. Mr J. Milligan expressed thanks on behalf of the Farmers’ Union. •Mr M. English and Mr A. Mudie spoke in appreciation of the division’s hospitality and help with the recent concert held in aid of the funds of the Young Farmers’ Club.
