Louis Not In Dempsey Or Tunney Class
In his fight with Tony Galento Joe Louis was on the brink of losing his title on three distinct occasions, writes Trevor Wignail from New York. The main point proved was that Louis, because of his revealed weakness, is not entitled to be ranked with giants of the past such as Dempsey, Tunney, Fitzsimmons and Jack Johnson. . He has accumulated a very considerable fortune—his reward for beating Galento worked out at well over £2OOO a minute—and his main anxiety now is to enjoy life. I don’t think he will ever be seen m action in England. The truth is that the war scares have bothered him so acutely that he does not even want to cross the Atlantic.
