MARRIED COUPLE STOW AWAY

PENNILESS ABOARD THE AWATEA WORLDLY POSSESSIONS IN PAPER BAG (United Press Assn.—Telegraph Copyright) (Received June 19, 10.50 p.m.) SYDNEY, June 19. Penniless, with their worldly possessions in a brown-paper bag, a young married couple who stowed away at Wellington in the liner Awatea. announced their presence to the master (Captain A. F. Davey) late the first night out. They claim to be Australians, but as they were unable to furnish the immigration authorities with conclusive proof they have been detained aboard the liner. The husband naid they went to Wellington a few months ago and he secured a job as a motor driver; but the climate beat him. He expected money from Australia, but it did not arrive. When he left his job they were faced with starvation, so they stowed away. The passengers subscribed £6, which will go towards the wife’s fare.
