LOST SUBMARINE TO BE RAISED
Earl Stanhope Denies Abandonment HEAVIER CABLES TO BE USED IN WORK (Received June 9, 6.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 8. The Controller of the Navy is going to Birkenhead to confer with experts about the next step in the salvaging of the Thetis. The Press Association states that the advisability of lea zing the Thetis , on the sea bed was under consideration, but Earl Stanhope, First Lord of the
Admiralty, in the House of Lords said that no authority for the suggestion that the Thetis may be abandoned existed. The Prime Minister (Mr Neville Chamberlain) in the House of Commons announced that Mr Justice Bucknill will preside over the Thetis inquiry. .... The, flooding of the submarine is thought to have been more than was expected as a consequence of the loss of buoyancy which , necessitated more powerful lifting gear. A survivor, Leading Stoker W. F. Arnold, volunteered to be the first to enter the Thetis after the ’salvage. All plant has been temporarily withdrawn from the scene of the wreck because of the necessity of manufacturing heavier salvage cables, which will probably mean a week’s delay.
