'Messrs John Fisher (chairman of the Farmers’ Dairy Federation) and D. Rutledge (manager of the Federation) returned by the express last night from Dunedin, where they attended the conference of the South Island Dairy Association.

Mr T. F. Gilkison, who represented the Invercargill and Gore branches of the New Zealand Defence League at the first annual conference of the league in Wellington, returned to Invercargill by the express last night. Mr Gilkison is a member of the executive of 1 the Invercargill branch of the league. Mr C. G. Scrimgeour, Controller of Commercial Broadcasting, returned by the Monterey from an extended visit to the United States.—Press Association. Mr A. C. Mr W. Carswell, of Invercargill, and Mr T. F. Paul, of Mabel Bush, have returned from the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Association at Dunedin.

Mr W. H. Gregory, engineer, and Mr C. Campbell, secretary of the Southland Electric Power Supply," have returned to Invercargill from a departmental conference.

Messrs W. Hishon (Winton), W. S. Horrell (Waiau), J. A. Edwards (Gore) and Robert Wylie (Wyndham), who have been co-opted as directors of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association as representatives of district , associations, were present at a meeting of directors yesterday and were welcomed by the president (Dr A. F. Ritchie Crawford). Mr E. J. Sheldon, advance agent for the Chang Theatrical Company, arrived in Invercargill yesterday.

Mr F. E. Sutton has been elected chairman of the Lyttelton Harbour Board.

Mr Brian Hart, of Wellington, who has been visiting Invercargill, has left to take up a position in Sydney. A motion of sympathy with Cr F. F. Trapski in the death of his son, Mr F. Trapski, who died under an operation yesterday morning, was passed at yesterday’s meeting of the Southland County Council. Complimentary reference to the work of Mr J. M. Smith (field superintendent of the Department of Agriculture) who will shortly be leaving Otago, was made by Mr A. C. Cameron at the annual meeting of the Young Farmers’ Clubs at Dunedin. Mr Smith had been looked upon by all the farmers, as a personal friend, and all were appreciative of his efficiency, his enthusiasm, his organizing capabilities, and his work in general, he said. On behalf of the combined Southland and Otago Clubs Mr Cameron presented Mr Smith with a camera. Messrs S. D. Broomfield, S. W. Saxby, R. T. Kinaston, John Young, jun., W. R. Harris and S. R. Whyte, praised Mr Smith’s work, and wished him success in the Waikato district. Reference was made at the annual conference of the South Island Dairy Association by the chairman (Mr H. H. Meredith, Waimate) to the impending retirement from the post of secretary to the Dairy Produce Board of lyir T. C. Brash, who has spent 50 years in the dairy industry. The best wishes of the conference were extended to Mr Brash for the future, and appreciation was expressed of his sterling services to the industry. Returning thanks, Mr Brash said he would complete 50 years’ association with the industry in September.
