NEW SECRETARY APPOINTED

SOUTHLAND HOSPITAL BOARD NEW PLYMOUTH APPLICANT CHOSEN The appointment of Mr Alexander M. Williams, of New Plymouth, as se cre " tary and treasurer of the Southland Hospital Board has been approved by the Minister of Health (the Hon. P. Fraser). The present secretary ana treasurer of the board (Mr T. Pryde) is retiring from the position. It is _ expected that Mr Williams, who is at present secretary and treasurer of the Taranaki Hospital Board, will take up his new duties in about three months time. Mr Williams, who is 34 years of age, has had extensive hospital board and local body experience. He was appointed accountant of the Taranaki Board early in 1934 and three years later, in January 1937, he was appointed secretary and treasurer. He received his primary education at the Moana school, Westland, and, after winning a National Scholarship, went to the Greymouth High School. Three

years later he entered the public service, beinj for seven years stationed at Wellington. He then went tp Taranaki and, for five years, did local body and Government audit work, with headquarters at New Plymouth. He joined the Taranaki Hospital Board in 1934 as accountant. There were 82 applications for the position, from persons living in all parts of New Zealand. Two applications were received from Australia. Mr Pryde has held the position for more than 31 years, having taken office on March 16, 1908.
