COUSIN BETTY’S LETTER

My Dear Cousins,

You know I do not like having to growl at you, but this week it is absolutely necessary. The noise on Sally Staircase was so great on the visiting day for girls this week that I seriously considered stopping the visiting days for a few weeks, until you realized that you MUST GO QUIETLY UP AND DOWN THE STAIRS. These days seem to be a part of the Chronicle, and I do not want to stop them, but if they disturb the other people in the building who are trying to work, then we must do without them. So please, my cousins, tip-toe as quietly as you can, and show me that you do want library days to continue. There is another point too, cousins of mine. Bring your school-cases upstairs with you and leave them in the library, where they will be out of the way. And now that the growl is over (for ever, I hope), let me tell you my news. There is a letter for you in the Chronicle this week from “Ehoa” to whom your coupons and stamped addressed envelopes are sent each week. “Ehoa” is the Maori for “friend,” and is the pen-name of the kind New Zealander who sends you pen-friends. ’ Have you noticed the Art Club competition for this week? It is a sketch of Humpty Dumpty for you to colour, but Percy Pencil has suggested another use for Humpty. He says that if you traced the outline you could use it as an embroidery design when you are making articles for the bazaar. A dolly’s quilt, or a baby’s feeder, would be most attractive stamped with this design and done in brightly coloured cottons. There will be other Art Club subjects suitable for tracing and copying before the bazaar is held. Are you enjoying the serial, my older cousins? There is another exciting chapter for you to read this week. Remember the stairs!

Your loving
