RIVERTON

INCREASE IN SCHOOL ATTENDANCE Largely as a result of the school at Oraki having been closed down by the Education Department, the attendance at the Riverton District High School has shown an increase since the beginning of the second term. The number on the roll of the primary department is 170, and there are now 22 pupils in the secondary department, the total of 192 representing an increase of 20 on the number attending the school at the close of the first term. Absences caused by sickness are now very few, but earlier in the term a number of pupils and some of the teachers were victims of the influenza epidemic. The rector (Mr J. W. Martin) said yesterday that it was expected that the daily supply of milk to pupils would be inaugurated next week. ROAD WIDENING Yesterday a party of men employed by the Southland Electric Power Supply was engaged in shifting the power poles back to the edge of the newly widened road from the south end of the Aparima river bridge to The Rocks. New poles were erected, . the power lines were shifted and the old poles taken down. The surface width of this road has been almost doubled by the recent improvements, and there should now be little congestion on it during the summer months when thousands of cars use it. RENOVATIONS TO POST OFFICE The interior of the Riverton Post Office has recently been renovated and now presents a much improved appearance. In addition the counter grille has been removed and the top widened, and the exchange room has been enlarged to make provision for the increasing number of telephone subscribers. The carpentry work was carried out by Mr C. Beaton (Bluff) and his staff and the painting was entrusted to Mr W. T. Moore (Riverton). An area of about 24 feet square at the rear of the Post Office main building has also been covered with concrete. REGISTRATIONS Approximately 400 motor-vehicles have been registered at the Riverton Post Office during the past month, and the number of social security levies received exceeds 800. The number of inquiries for forms on which to make returns of income other than salary or wages exceeded the supply of forms available, and stocks of these have not yet come to hand.
