CHRISTCHURCH SOUTH BYELECTION

FIGURES FOR OFFICIAL COUNT (United Press Association) CHRISTCHURCH, June 8. The official count in the Christchurch South by-election gives the Labour candidate, Mr R. M. Macfarlane, a majority of 3895 over the National candidate (Mr M. E. Lyons). The figures are: Macfarlane 7900 Lyons 4005 The voting on the first count was: Macfarlane 7492 Lyons 3779 Mr Macfarlane on the first count received 2393 fewer votes than Mr E. J. Howard did at the last election. Mr Lyons’s total on the first count was 111 fewer than Mr Gladstone Ward’s final total when he opposed Mr Howard last October.
