BYRD’S PLANS FOR EXPEDITION

MONROE DOCTRINE IN THE ANTARCTIC WASHINGTON, June 8. Rear-Admiral R. E. Byrd told a House sub-committee which is studying his request for an appropriation for an Antarctic expedition that the portions of Antarctica which fall inside the western hemisphere .come under the Monroe Doctrine and that only 575 nautical miles separated Palmer Land from South America. Rear-Admiral Byrd said the expedition, for which a preliminary appropriation of 340,000 dollars is being asked, would ultimately cost 1,000,000 dollars. The expedition would include three ships and a personnel of 200, and would probably leave on October 1 and return in six months, although it would carry supplies for two years.
