RETURNED SOLDIERS FORGATHER GOOD ATTENDANCE AT ANNUAL REUNION There was a full attendance of members at the annual reunion of the Stewart Island Returned Soldiers’ SubAssociation, which was held at the Korari Tea Rooms, Half Moon Bay. The function took the form of a dinner with a smoke concert in the hall to follow. A toast-list was honoured. The guest of honour was Mr C. Robertson, of Horse Shoe Bay, an honorary member, who is approaching 90 years of age. Mr Robertson spoke on the early days of the island and described the paddle steamers of the time. Apologies were received from the president of the Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association (Mr H. C. McKenzie), Mr J. Hargest, M.P., Mr A. Wachner (Invercargill) and Captain R. J. Hamilton (Bluff). An invitation to members to attend the opening of the new club rooms of the Bluff Sub-Association tomorrow was received. The following toast-list was honoured: Fallen Comrades; The Invercargill Returned Soldiers’ Association (proposed by Messrs C. Smith and W. Braxton and responded to by Mr R. Braxton). ‘ BOWLING GREEN AT ISLAND GOOD PROGRESS REPORTED AT MEETING Good progress in the formation of the new bowling green was reported by the secretary at a meeting of the recently-formed Stewart Island Bowling Club. Mr T. K. Bragg was chairman in the absence of the president (Mr J. A. Sloane), who has been granted six months’ leave of absence. There were also present: Messrs G. T. Barton, J. K. Calder, T. E. Jensen, P. Souter and J. Sloan. ' The green was progressing very satisfactorily, it was stated, and it was hoped it would be ready for play early in the new season. The hedge which i had been planted around the green was growing very well. Several members were using their leisure cutting timber for the proposed pavilion. Reference to the death of Mr A. Pollock, one of the foundation members of the club, was made by the chairman. Members stood for a moment in silence as a mark of respect.
