CONVEYING TEAMS IN PRIVATE CARS

PASSENGERS NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE The reported interference of a traffic inspector with the arrangements made to convey a women’s hockey team in private cars from Milton to Lawrence last Saturday was the subject ,of a statement yesterday by the district officer of the Transport Department at Dunedin. It was previously reported that the team was being driven to Lawrence in two private cars and that the first car was on its way when the inspector arrived at Milton. He is said to have gone to the driver of the second car, a clergyman, and refused to allow him to proceed on his journey. He is stated’ to have followed the other car and informed the occupants that he had refused their team mates permission to travel by private car. According to the district officer, the inspector, as a result of representations made to him, merely interviewed the drivers of the cars and explained to them that they ran considerable risk of incurring heavy liability in the event of an accident, and that they had no insurance cover over the passengers they carried. The driver of one of the cars said he was carrying the players because they could not hire a vehicle. The inspector pointed out that there were taxis available at the moment he was speaking. He made no attempt to prevent them from continuing their journey, but the drivers of the cars took it upon themselves to say that they would not go if they would be liable in the event of an accident and that vehicles for hire were available.
