LOSS OF OVA IN VICTORIA

DAMAGE DONE BY BUSH FIRES REQUEST FROM FISHERMEN TO SOUTHLAND SOCIETY Damage done by the bush fires to the trout fishing in Victoria was mentioned by the secretary of the Victorian Fly-Fishers’ Association (Mr G. G. Foletta) in a letter read at last night’s meeting of the council of the Southland Acclimatization Society. The letter followed a request, which came in the form of a cable to Mr Eustace Russell, for 100,000 ova. The bush fires, the writer said, had done a tremendous amount of harm to the inland waters. The Ballarat Acclimatization Society’s hatcheries had lost practically their whole year’s supply of yearlings. This in itself was a serious financial loss, but added to this all the indications for their future prospects that they could gain so far were that the supply of trout for stripping would be most inadequate. It was decided to supply up to 100,000 ova at 5/6 a 1000, provided the Southland Society could secure 800,000 for itself.

A request from the Lakes District Acclimatization Society for 100,000 rainbow ova was refused, as the council had not sufficient supplies for its own needs.

The Department of Internal Affairs advised that it had been decided to give effect to the recommendation of the society that an open season for opossums be declared in the society’s district. The season would be from noon on July 1 to noon on August 1 inclusive. The Tuatapere Domain Board wrote thanking the society for placing ducks and swans on the Tuatapere Domain. “The ducks and swans are doing well,” the letter added, “and are being attended and fed daily. They create quite a lot of interest. Out of the six Paradise there are two ducks and four drakes.” Dr G. H. Orbell was appointed the society’s representative on the executive of the Southland Progress League. >
