OTAUTAU

FARMERS’ UNION Mr J. H. Beck (president) presided over an attendance of 11 members at the annual meeting of the Aparima branch of the Farmers’ Union. The annual report showed that the branch had 62 financial members. The monthly. meetings had not been well attended, but the delegates _ had attended the provincial meetings _ and much good work had been accomplished in the interests of farmers. The bal-ance-sheet showed a credit of £27. The following officers were elected: President, Mr J. H. Beck; vice-presi-dents, Messrs F. T. Dickson and EL C. Pullar; secretary and treasurer, Mr H. C. Pullar; delegates to conference, the president and secretary; delegate to provincial executive, Mr J. H. Beck; committee, the elected officers and Messrs P. MacKenzie, W. R. Ayson, F. C. .Chilton, J. M. Ayton, J. A. Dodds and C. C. Johnstone. The annual remits for the conference were considered. A circular was received from the New Zealand Defence League asking for co-operation in the movement, and it was decided that this be supported. It was decided to adopt a new system in the management of the branch, the executive to do the routine business, and members to be invited to attend when addresses were to be given or vital matters considered. LODGE BALL There was a good attendance at the annual ball held under the auspices of the Loyal Otautau Lodge, M.U.1.0.0.r. The hall was decorated with greenery and streamers for the occasion. The Regent Dance Band supplied the music and extras were played by Messrs J. Halliday (Mataura) and L. Coombes. Mr A Edwards was master of ceremonies. A lucky spot waltz was won by Miss C. Sheddan and Mr P. Clayton. EUCHRE The prizes at the last euchre tournament in the school were won by MrsE. Jellyman and Mr C. Thomas. The consolation trophy was awarded to Mr W. Pulley. BAND OF HOPE Mr G A. Burnett presided at the meeting of the Band of Hope, and gave an address on the evils of alcohol. Mrs Densem also spoke to the children on the ideals of the Band of Hope. The following gave items: Songs, Masters J. Thomas and A. Coughlan; recitations, Misses Edna Thomas, Eunice Jellyman and Audrey Coughlan; duet Margaret Fisher and Eunice JeUyman
