TRACK WORK AT WINGATUI

RIDING ENGAGEMENTS ANNOUNCED KTPPEN SHOWING FINE FORM (Special to The Times)" DUNEDIN, June 8. Black Banner will not be starting in the Dimedin Steeplechase at Wingatui on Saturday and this leaves T. J. Boyle free to ride El Caballo. Wilson Ellis, who has been riding at Wanganui, will be present at Wingatui for the final day’s racing and he will have a mount on Spanish Lad in the King George Handicap. Other riding engagements announced are as follows:— C. T. Wilson.—Epic, Elegy, Night Hawk, Top Row. L. Hare.—Nightcalm, Astaire. R. J. Mackie.—Silver Streak, Disband. P. Spratt—Passaform. A. Stove.—Pink Robe. The inside grass track at Wingatui was very hard and fast yesterday morning. Epic and Petersham covered five furlongs in lmin 1 2-ssec, and over a similar journey Roy Bun was much too good for Astral Flash and Valantua in lmin 1 4-ssec. Nightcalm and Night Hawk finished together in lmin 2 Strathalbyn and Freecourse were going well at the end of four furlongs, covered in 51sec. Elegy and Balmenter on the sand took lmin 19 3-ssec for six furlongs, and

Lazybones and Neptune required lmin 20sec. These were about the best of tlie gallops. Red Terror jumped the sod wall and the double brush satisfactorily on a schooling circuit, and Ballad and Drinkup gave a fast display over three hurdles.

Kippen galloped about half a mile, but was not timed. The Woodend gelding seems particularly fit at the moment and must again be in the money on Saturday. The weather is exceptionally fine and a fast track should again be the rule for the final day’s racing. INVERCARGILL SWORD CLUB . CHALLENGE BOUTS HELD Three new women members joined the Invercargill Sword Club at its weekly meeting. The first half of the evening was spent in class drill and general training. Several challenge bouts were held and the results are: Kirk beat O’Brien, 5-0; Black beat Murdock, 5-4; Thom beat Aitcheson, 5-4; Macgregor beat Taylor, 5-0; Matthews beat Woodward, 5-3; Black beat Woodward, 5-4; Martin beat Smith, 5-1. The challenge ladder is now as follows:— Men.—Mitchell, Matthews, Black, Woodward, Murdock, Thom, Aitcheson, Barnett, Kirk, O’Brien, Macgregor, Taylor, Lees. Women.—Miss Martin, Miss Smith, Miss Moore. Play in the bouts was very slow, members concentrating more on correct fencing than on actual fighting. The parries were fairly ragged and i could be improved considerably. Mr I Macgregor was the only member to I use the riposte movement to advantage. This method is of great value as a method of counter-attack. It is expected that, as members are very keen, the standard of play will soon show a great improvement.
