RIVERTON

EARLY SETTLERS’ ASSOCIATION PERMANENT MEDALLIONS FOR MEMBERS At a meeting of the executive of the Wallace Early Settlers’ Association, the adoption of a permanent medallion for members was considered and several designs were submitted. After a full discussion, it was unanimously agreed that medallions be issued to replace the ribbons worn by members at annual gatherings in the past. The medallion, which was selected from several designs submitted is to be of silver and somewhat similar to the Riverton Centenary medallion, w.'th an engraving of the Howell Memorial in the centre, together with appropriate lettering and dates. Doubt was expressed whether the medallions would be available in time for the next reunion of the association in September. Those who attended the meeting were: The president (Mr W. Ford) and Mesdames F. Webb and S. Haslemore, Messrs E. J. Stevens, John McKay, E. Howell, E. Daniel, W. Stormouth, F. McKay and the secretary (Mr H. Spear). The president referred to the loss suffered by the association through the deaths of four valued members. Mrs ,H. S. Pankhurst, Miss McLean, Mr W. Pearsey and Mr G. R. Berndston. He. made special reference to Mr Bemdston, who had been a very staunch supporter of the association since >its inception and was a regular attender at meetings. The interest he had shown and the help he had given in conducting the association’s affairs had been much appreciated by all members. On his motion, it was decided to record the following resolution: “That this meeting places on record their sense of the loss sustained by the Wallace Early Settlers’ Association in the death of Mr G. R. Berndston. and desires to convey to Mrs Berndston and relations a message of sympathy and sorrow.” The president also referred to. the active interest taken in the association 'by Mrs Pankhurst, who had been a member for many years. Mr E. J. Stevens supported the president’s remarks. On the motion of Mrs Webb, a special vote of thanks was accorded Mr E. J. Stevens for his untiring efforts in raising funds for the association. It was decided to hold a concert and dance later in the year for the purpose of augmenting the association’s funds. EUCHRE TOURNAMENT There was a fair attendance at the weekly euchre tournament run by the Riverton branch of the New Zealand Labour Party. The function was held in Fleck’s Hall. The women’s prizes were won by Mrs E. Eade (first) and Mrs W. Leader (second). The successful players in the men’s section were Mr A. McKenzie (first) and Mr E. Shaw (second). MOTHERS’ LEAGUE The monthly meeting of the Riverton branch of the League of Mothers’ Union was held at the home of Mrs W. Smyth at South Riverton, where Mesdames Gray, Hunter, Smyth, Inder, Armstrong, Arthur, Mennell, Wohlers, Philp, Patrick, Haslemore, Wilson, Ashley, Hodgkinson and Odell were entertained at afternoon tea. A paper on “Right Feeding” was presented by Mesdames W. Smyth and W. S. Hunter and was fully discussed. The president (Mrs Gray) said that the next monthly meeting would be held at her residence in North Riverton, and that the subject for discussion would be “Exercise.” GIRLS’ EDUCATIONAL WEEK Riverton is to receive a visit from a party of about 100 girls who are participating in the Country Girls’ Educational Week. The girls are to attend the monthly meeting of the Riverton branch of the Women’s Division of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union on Tuesday next, and will be entertained at afternoon tea by members of the branch at the conclusion of the meeting. At a meeting of the committee of the Riverton branch of the Women’s Division, arrangements for the entertainment of the girls were made, and it was decided to invite the Mayor (Dr N. G. Trotter) to welcome the party. It was intimated that the party would include about 16 girls from North Otago and more than 60 from various parts of Southland. WEATHER DURING MAY The month of May was very dry in Riverton this year, the total rainfall for the 31 days being only 3.10 inches. Rain fell on 14 days, the heaviest fall on any one day being .61 inches on the 6th and the 29th. Several severe frosts were experienced, especially towards the end of the month, more than 20 degrees being recorded on one morning. May of 1938 was the driest experienced in Riverton for several years, the total fall of rain being 1.27 inches, spread over 11 days. CARD PARTY The usual weekly card evening held under the auspices of the Aparima Returned Soldiers’ Bowling Club in Mr MacDougall’s rooms was again well attended. The men’s first prize was won by Mr S. Eade, and in the women’s section Mrs Philp was successful. Consolation honours went to Mrs Cox and Mr A. Cassels.

FISHING IN WEST COAST SOUNDS Manned by a crew consisting of Messrs L. McFadgen and W. Anderson, the auxiliary ketch Southern Light has left Riverton to begin fishing operations in the West Coast ’ sounds for Messrs Johnston Brothers, of Bluff. It is expected that the fishermen will be away all winter and for part of the spring. Good results are expected, the fishing at the sounds being reputed to be among the best in New Zealand. The old Government steamer Stella, which serves as a freezer, has comfortable

living quarters for the manager of the plant. FOOTBALL CLUB SELECTORS Because of the resignation of Mr A. F. Webb, the position of teams’ selector of the Riverton Football Club recently fell vacant. At a meeting of the committee, presided over by the president (Mr C. Aberdeen), Mr Webb’s resignation was received with regret, and Messrs C. Aberdeen, G. Bulman and A. McKenzie were appointed selectors in his stead.
