ATTACK MADE ON TAXI DRIVER

TWO YOUTHS REMANDED ON ASSAULT CHARGES (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, June 7. The two youths who were arrested yesterday as the outcome of an assault on a taxi driver on Saturday night appeared in Court today. Both were charged with assaulting William George Styants so as to cause actual bodily harm. As one of the youths is only 16 years and nine months and is outside the jurisdiction of the Magistrate’s Court, he appeared before Mr McKean, who sat as a Children’s Court. He was remanded by consent till June 23, and as neither the Child Welfare Department nor the boy’s father would undertake the responsibility of looking after him until then, the Magistrate remanded him in custody and ordered him to be kept apart from the other prisoners. The other youth, Bruce Phillips, aged 17 and five months, appeared before Mr Orr Walker, S.M., in the Police Court and was remanded by consent till June 23. He was admitted to bail on his own surety of £lOO and a surety of £lOO, the Magistrate directing that if bail was not forthcoming he be kept apart from the other prisoners.
